Negative taken for January 11, 1961, Arkansas Gazette article "Letters From a Civil War Soldier to His Southern Belle," B1:2. Helen Bragg (Mrs. T.J.) Gaughan of Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas has published a book of letters her father sent to her mother during the Civil War. Her father, Junius N. Bragg, was a Confederate soldier and doctor during the war. The first letter was dated August 11, 1861, and the last May 20, 1865. During the war he married his sweetheart, Josephine Goddard of Camden. Family legend says that she hid the letters under her full skirts to protect them from Union troops.

Resident of Camden, Ark. Helen Bragg Gaughan was born in Camden, Ark., in 1875, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Junius N. Bragg. She married Thomas J. Gaughan in 1899. She joined the New Century Club in Camden the same year and was a member of the club for the rest of her life, serving as president from 1918 to 1919 and again from 1937 to 1939.
